I have been privileged to work with Chris in two capacities which demonstrate qualities Chris would bring to the role: as his principal for 3 years (2015-2018)in an inner-city Nanaimo school where empathic and inclusive qualities were essential to any effective role of leadership, and also, more currently as part of our NLPS Nacu mat Tatulut (NMT) Committee where collaboration and planning together is essential to our work of embedding the Syeyutsus Principles of Teaching and Learning into the work we do for our educators and students here in Nanaimo. I believe I have had an intimate eye into the work and person of Chris and am confident in being his referee.
As I read over the qualities and skills you are seeking for this Member-At-Large role, it is clear to me that Chris would exceed your expectations in what he would bring to it.
Our school’s values were lived and built on trust, kindness, inclusion, and the determination to make sure all children and staff knew they mattered. His actions embodied this dedication. Every day he brought joy and curiosity to his role and sought compassionate ways he could be a blessing. He worked well as a team member, kept diversity and inclusion at the forefront, sought to develop skills and approaches to working with others, and was steadfastly open, curious, and kind. While strong in his personal beliefs, he was respected for them. Chris lived what he believed with pride and joy and an open heart.
Chris went beyond what his actual job entailed. He became involved in volunteer tasks that required adaptability and time. As well, staff members sought Chris out for support and Chris checked in on how staff were doing. He was a team player who consistently exuded joy and vulnerability.
I see him doing the same in our NMT (Nacu mat Tatulat) Committee. His involvement and enthusiasm for the welfare of this district is non-extinguishable and neither is his energy and joy.
Chris has a generous heart, an ability to connect with others, a collaborative spirit, curiosity, and tireless enthusiasm. As long as I have known him Chris has been open about all the work needed for the LGBTQ community and I know this role of Member-At-Large is dear to his heart, as is his desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
